A short video on Emily Forrest as she awaits her clients at the Halifax Seaport Market. I just happened to pass her on my way back from visiting the market and taking photos of “Wrap so D” preparing his breakfast wraps while he sings his favorite songs.

It was a busy day with a cruise ship in the harbor. There were many people milling about. Emily was off to do the rounds at Uncommon Grounds, Chives and other well known and loved Halifax restaurants. The walking tour is a stop and taste affair and Emily carefully selects restaurants with top chefs and great food. The chefs prepare bite size samples for the guests; it’s a meal by the end of the tour.

Parade Blue Box Band Video #1

The Bands all dressed up in their spectacular costumes parade down the street swaying to their tune, dancing and carrying on.

Video #1 (image at right),  is the first band we filmed (blue box), its actually number two in the parade that started with a dozen bands.  Barbados Carnival  is  an August Holiday Party and for the whole month the islands is partying. The night clubs stage parties and dancing is everywhere. All the while the competition for the best band, the best tune and the best costumes are winding down.

The Grande finale of Carnival in Barbados is Kadooment or the big-to-do. This is the Grand parade of bands and their supporters all in fancy dress marching to their beat on the street.

Jouve

You will also hear the word J’ouvert or Jouve associated with carnival, This is derived from the French jour ouvert, or dawn/day break. In Barbados it is called Foreday. Jouves are night-time street party and one of the many Crop Over Events for the season> Jouve (foreday) is a precursor to the Grand Kadooment parade. Revelers cover themselves in paint and mud parading in the early foreday morning. Lots of music food & drinks are available for the march. Foreday 2012 is on Saturday August 6th just two days before the Grand Final Kadooment Parade on Monday August 8th.

Crop Over

Carnival Smiles

Crop over is an entire season over several months. It starts in April and ends in August. Through that time costumes are made, calypso are created, bands practice their new songs and enter into a long list of performances and competitions. All nightclubs in Barbados get into the act and there are endless parties, live show and dance.

Barbados born International singing star, Rihanna was here for Crop-Over Carnival last  year and was not at all shy about joining the very raunchy bumps and grinds, which are sometimes not at all  elegant. Skin and suggestion are on parade at Carnival which is a time to celebrate and let it all go.  Caribbean people love to let go and be sexy.

The big event, the grand parade in August (Kadooment), is a hot tourist attraction and a time to let your hair down and let it rip in Barbados. Everything goes almost. But I noted that in 2012 the army stood by at the end of the spring garden parade street with automatics in hand. They were smart and discreet behind the wire fence, dressed in combat camouflage, but the reserves were watching the girls who taunted them with provocative moves and taunting smiles.

Even after the parade the party continues with celebrations, live events and parties.

Endangered Species

The Green  Sea Turtles hang out along the reefs off the west coast of Barbados. Not long ago they were considered a delicacy and harvested as food by local fishermen. Today all turtles in Barbados are protected. It is illegal to catch any species of sea turtle, or possess any turtle product (i.e. meat, shell, eggs) in Barbados. Penalties include fines up to $50,000 Barbados dollars and/or two years in jail.

As a result of these conservation and protection measures, the turtle population in Barbados has grown and flourished. They nest on the beaches mostly on the south and west side of the island, and you will see them swimming off the reefs where they tend to frequent specific areas and frequently return to their favorite spots.

We don’t know if this video is technically and politically correct. It seems to show two turtles kissing. Can that be true? – We will have to investigate – but watch it for yourself. The kiss is slightly elongated in our movie production but the action is unedited!! What do you think? Do Turtles Kiss?

Anyway the turtles are having a ball and seem to love all the attention and the frolic with swimmers on this catamaran sail and party cruise.

So here are the facts that we know on turtles romance. Females turtles  mate every two to four years. Males can mate every year. So you have to wait up to 4 years for a mate as a female, but we suppose kissing can be anytime!

After mating the female turtles wait a 7-10 weeks gestation period. They then pull themselves out of the water to dig nest for their eggs in the sand, above the high water mark.  The mother will dig a hole a foot or more  with the hind flippers and lay over 100 eggs.   She will cover them in sand and return back out to sea. The sand protects the eggs from predators and keeps the shells moist and at the right temperature. The mother will swim away after laying her eggs and never return. The hatchlings tend to return to the beach where they were hatched as they mature (maybe more than 25 years later).

The eggs hatch during the night around  45 to 75 days after laying. The Green turtle hatchlings are tiny, no bigger than a the palm of a child’s hand. They  instinctively head directly into the water. This is the most dangerous time in a turtle’s life as they must avoid gulls, crabs, and beach dogs that feed on them. Many never make it to the ocean.

The juvenile turtles spend up to five years in the open ocean. They are rarely seen as they live for several years in the deep, pelagic waters.  Imagine these tiny little creatures fending all for themselves in the  ocean way off the shore. How brave they must be.  Scientist refer to this stage as the “The Lost Years” as little is known. They get carried on tides and live close to the surface hiding in floating seaweeds.  Some species end up in the gulf stream, hitching a ride on the “floating nursery” of the Sargasso sea.  A cycle of  floating Sargassum seaweed that circulates clockwise around the north Atlantic, providing  a refuge for small turtles.  In this stage the turtles are carnivorous, feeding on the bite-sized, floating prey. Living like this they remind me of the floating islands in Bolivia’s great lake Titicaca where whole families have for generation lived in houses made of reeds floating on islands of reeds.

Later, as they mature and become the size of a diner plate, they  return to the shallow coastal waters the feed on seagrass and a mostly herbivorous diet.

Young Turtles take from twenty to fifty years to reach sexual maturity and can live up to eighty years in the wild. Only 1% of hatchlings reach maturity.

Mature turtles spend most of their time in shallow, coastal waters with lush seagrass beds. Adults frequent inshore bays, lagoons and shoals with lush seagrass meadows. Entire generations often migrate between one pair of feeding and nesting areas

Migration

In the wild green sea turtles migrate long distances from feeding and nesting sites. Some swim more than 2,600 kilometres (1,600 miles) to reach their spawning grounds.   In Barbados, with turtles so well fed by visiting tourists and locals, perhaps they migrate less. We will look for more research as time progresses.

Breathing and sleep

Sea turtles spend almost all their lives underwater but come to the surface to breathe air for the oxygen they need every  4 to 5 minutes during active hours. They will rest or sleep underwater for several hours at a time.

They are beautiful and very social. We are told to respect them and not pet them. That is pretty hard to resist as you just want to reach out and connect with these large, big shelled, green turtles that swim under the boat and seem to want to play.

The crew, who swims with them regularly, knows them by colors and markings, and seems to have a personal friendship. I think that the friendship is mostly because they quietly feed them; but hey, it’s cool. Turtles love it and know that they are protected. They don’t end up in soup. It’s excellent for the turtles and lovely for us all to see them.

The Dragon Boat Race

The Penang dragon boat race is the perfect blend of beautiful Malayan culture and adrenaline-pumping action. A Malayan myth claims that the race was first started when a Chinese poet named Qu Yuan committed suicide by drowning himself in the Miluo River. The poet’s best friend paddled across the river to get his body back before it was lost in the river. This event is believed to have happened on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month, as per the Chinese calendar. Even today, the memory of Qu Yuan and his friend is honored at the annual Duanwu Jie Festival.

Today, the Penang International Dragon Boat Racing Festival is held yearly at the Teluk Bahang Dam. Despite the modern trappings, the festival’s symbol, which is a Chinese dragon with a head of an ox, the antlers of a deer, a horse’s mane and a fish tail, is still a colorful and exhilarating symbol of ancient Malay.

The modern version of the Penang dragon boat race was first held in 1956. This race now attracts top competitors from around the world, as any team that is a member of the International Dragon Boat Federation can compete. Teams even come from the United States and Europe.

Each race team has a maximum of 22 participants, who must move together in perfect synchronization to win the race, making this a truly moving spectacle of human strength and stamina.

Where To Stay And Party?

The most convenient place to stay is near Batu Ferringhi, which is only a comfortable distance away from the Teluk Bahang Dam. The dragon festival lasts three days, which gives you a lot of time to check out the nightlife.

Penang has a thriving club scene with several great party venues. Many of the clubbing establishments have large dance floors that also double as socializing venues. The weekends, in particular, see a heavy crowd in all the city’s many bars, discos, pubs, karaoke lounges, and nightclubs. The best place to find the hottest party destinations in town is definitely the area between the famous Eastern & Oriental Hotel and the Cititel Hotel. Located nearly around Upper Penang Road in Georgetown, the area has an eclectic mix of trendy bars, state-of-the-art nightclubs, and old-school English pubs.

To conclude, Penang is definitely climbing the list of Asia’s hottest party holiday destinations. Try to schedule your party holidays to coincide with the dragon race festival, to get an authentic taste of Penang while partying. Be sure to book your accommodations early, if you are planning to attend the race, since most of the best hotels will be fully booked in advance.

Bali, Indonesia

Seminyak is definitely one of the dark horses of the South East Asia clubbing scene. While most tourists go to Bali for the established nightlife of nearby Kuta beach, Seminyak offers a more classy and lively party destination at slightly higher prices.

For The Sophisticated Traveler

Seminyak is definitely the place to go to run shoulders with the rich and the famous. The hottest party destinations in this town are the many upmarket beach clubs that litter this boutique town. Seminyak is safer and more laid back than Kuta and offers several spas and high-end restaurants as well as some great clubbing destinations.

Holiday Party Destinations

You should definitely try to manage a night at the WooBar, the open-air beachfront party venue at the W Hotel. The club features several international DJs and is usually jam-packed with both tourists and locals. You might want to stay away from the drinks though, which tend to be priced on the higher side. Be sure to stay away from the water, especially after a couple of drinks. The strong currents can be dangerous, even for experienced swimmers.

The Ku de Ta is another one of Seminyak’s hottest party scenes. The cocktails tend to be rather high priced, but the crowd is always humming and nothing beats lounging and partying with the island’s beautiful horizon in the background.

The Potato Head Beach Club is another venue famous for its crazy club scene. This well-known party venue is very near the beach and you can be sure to see hundreds of party animals gyrating to the most popular tunes around the stunning infinity pool. Be sure to dress well and carry plenty of cash.

There are also one or two chilled out little pubs on the main street, where you can relax over a drink and mingle with the residents of the many beach resorts. Be sure to have one or two good outfits in your suitcase, since the crowd is definitely more sophisticated at these places.

Spas and Massages

Bali is famous for its luxury spas and Seminyak is the spa capital of the country. The town has several upmarket spas and boutiques and offers several unbelievably decadent treatments and massages.

Spend the day being pampered from head to foot, as specially trained technicians stroke, rub and pummel away all the tiredness of the previous night’s partying. If you plan to use one of the town’s many high-end hotels and private villas, then you will be able to enjoy in-house service and one or two complementary massages. Be sure to check for special packages or deals when making your booking.

Finally, spend a couple of hours exploring the charming beaches. Do not forget to check out the Pura Petitenget. The beautiful beach side temple, which is situated off Jl Petitenget, is well-known for its spectacular beach-side ceremonies. The temple complex has been in existence since the 16th century and is a popular landmark among locals.

Seminyak offers a plenty of attractions for travelers looking for great party holidays. You can easily drive down for a couple of days of partying from the bigger towns of Kuta or Legian.

Go Wreck Diving In Sparkling Waters

Powerhouse R&B singer Sheldon Gordon entertains on the waterfront at Halifax Jazz Festival. He is backed by the rhythm section of Mike Flemming and Jeff Barnes, guitars of Terry Morrison and Paul MacNabb, and Dave Bedford with the sweet sounds of the harp.

Sheldon Gordon takes the spotlight with smooth and rasping blues, but the crowd gives a standing ovation to his impromptu dance with his mother.

Started as a “project” more than 10 years ago, the George Street Blues Band is now a  staple of the New Brunswick blues scene.  It has played in major festivals throughout Atlantic Canada and Quebec,  earning a reputation for keeping the blues alive in the  traditional style of Chicago blues. To this they add their own original material and mix in many old traditional tunes, giving all a unique blues style of their own.

At the Halifax Jazz festival, the band is fronted by R&B singer Sheldon Gordon, giving a  new energy. Sheldon returns to his roots to celebrate the Jazz Festival with an hour of blues. In a very touching moment Sheldon leaves the stage to invite his mum to dance the blues. The crowd loved it and the clips show a very human side of a rocking  blues star.

Harvey Millar, a Saint Lucia born hip-hop and funk jazz guitar player, plays at the 2012 Halifax Jazz Festival in the open tent on the waterfront. The Halifax Jazz Festival is a grassroots event with eclectic jazz artistes. Each year it blends the old and the new, Celtic with Flamenco , French Gypsy music with classical guitar, folk with rock and fiddle with punk.

The midday tent is free to all that pass by and several patrons choose to sit on the beach and listen to jazz. Harvey follows R&B singer Sheldon Gordon who returns to Halifax to meet up with sister, award winning Blues singer Linda Carvery who is also participating in the festival. Sheldon Gordon wins the hearts of everyone by jumping off the stage to grab his mother for a dance.

The Philosopher Jazz:

Dr. Harvey Millar, who was born in Saint Lucia with some Barbadian roots, is now a Canadian national. He holds a Bachelors degree (Honors) in Industrial Engineering from the University of the West Indies. He earned a Masters of Applied Science in Industrial Engineering in 1984 and a Doctor of Philosophy in Industrial Engineering in 1990 from the Technical University of Nova Scotia. He is also a tenured Professor in the Sobey School of Business. Dr. Millar has presented his research at over 40 international conferences in Canada, The USA, Europe, South America, Mexico, Africa, and the Caribbean.

When he is not working on research, teaching, or presenting academia, Dr. Millar can be found composing jazz or entertaining fans with his funky hip-style of music fusion that fits well with the Nova Scotia experience. He is a 5-time music award winner, winning two East Coast Music Awards and three African Nova Scotia Music Awards.

Dr. Millar’s approach to life is guided by a favorite African proverb which states, “when spider webs unite, they can tie up a lion”.
